Air suspension symptoms
- One corner or the whole car sits low, often after it has been parked overnight
- “Suspension fault”, “AIRMATIC visit workshop” or “Vehicle too low” messages
- The compressor runs for a long time or you hear it cycling often after you park
- A hissing sound near a wheel or from under the car
- Height modes stop working, such as off-road height on a Range Rover or lift mode on a Porsche
- A harsh, crashing ride when the system drops to its bump stops
- The car will not rise after start-up, or rises unevenly
How air suspension works, and where it fails
Each corner has an air spring or air strut instead of a steel coil. An electric compressor fills a reservoir, a valve block sends air to each corner, and ride height sensors tell the control module when to add or release air. When an air spring leaks, the compressor works harder to make up the loss, and the compressor is usually the next part to fail.
| Part | Common failure |
|---|---|
| Air spring or strut | Cracked rubber bellows, leaking top seal |
| Compressor | Worn piston ring, overheating, failed relay |
| Air dryer | Saturated with moisture, letting water reach the valves |
| Valve block | Stuck valve or internal leak |
| Lines and fittings | Chafed or brittle plastic lines near the wheel well |
| Height sensors | Bent linkage or water in the connector |
How we diagnose it
- Scan with factory-level software. We use Mercedes XENTRY, JLR Pathfinder-level, Porsche PIWIS-level and VW/Audi ODIS-level tools to read height sensor values, pressure readings and compressor run times.
- Leak test. We pressurize the system and test each air spring, fitting and line with leak spray or an electronic detector.
- Compressor test. We time how long the compressor takes to raise the car and check its current draw and relay.
- Valve block and reservoir check. We isolate each circuit to see whether air is escaping inside the valve block.
- Photos and estimate. You see the cracked bellows or leaking fitting before you approve any work.
- Repair and calibrate. After replacing parts we recalibrate ride height with the factory procedure, then road test.
Brand-specific notes
Mercedes-Benz AIRMATIC
AIRMATIC appears on S-Class, E-Class, CLS, GLE, GLS and older ML and GL models. Front struts often leak at the top seal, and a stuck compressor relay can burn out the compressor. Many older S-Class and SL models use ABC hydraulic suspension instead, which we also service.
Range Rover and Land Rover
Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Velar and Discovery models use electronic air suspension. Front air springs and the compressor are the usual failures, and moisture in the valve block can cause height faults. Many of these models also use the system for Terrain Response off-road heights.
Porsche
Cayenne, Panamera, Macan and Taycan models with air suspension pair the air springs with PASM dampers. Air strut leaks and worn compressors are common as these cars age.
Audi
Adaptive air suspension on A6 allroad, A8, Q7, Q8 and e-tron models often fails at the front struts. We check ride height calibration with ODIS-level software after every repair.
Tesla and Rivian
Tesla Model S and Model X Smart Air Suspension can lose height from leaking struts or a tired compressor. Rivian R1T and R1S use air suspension for their adjustable ride heights. On both, we use the car’s jack or service mode before lifting so the system does not try to level itself.
South Florida heat and air suspension
Heat is the main enemy here. The rubber bellows on air springs dry out and crack faster in constant heat and UV exposure. Compressors run hotter in summer and lose efficiency, so a small leak pushes them past their duty cycle. Humidity loads the air dryer with moisture, and water that gets past it corrodes valve blocks and lines. Salt air near A1A and the beach attacks the metal fittings and crimp rings. Cars that sit for weeks during the off-season often show their first sag here, because rubber that has not flexed cracks when the car moves again.
What to expect on your visit
Walk in at either shop or book ahead. If your car sits too low to drive comfortably, call the shop to schedule pickup with our concierge service. We scan and leak test the system, send photos and a written estimate, and repair after you approve. Repairs carry our 2-year / 24,000-mile warranty.
