Signs of a coolant leak
- A sweet smell from the vents or engine bay after a drive
- A puddle of pink, blue, green, purple or orange fluid under the front of the car
- A low coolant warning on the dash
- The temperature gauge climbing in traffic or on hot afternoons
- White steam from under the hood
- Crusty residue around hoses, the expansion tank or the water pump
- Heater blowing cold, or a foggy windshield with a sweet smell, which can point to a heater core leak
How we find the leak
- Pressure test. We pressurize the cooling system to its normal operating pressure and watch for drops and drips.
- UV dye test. For slow leaks, we add dye and use a UV light to find the exact spot, even under the intake or behind the engine.
- Combustion gas test. A block test checks for exhaust gas in the coolant, a sign of a head gasket or cracked head.
- Scan the car. We read coolant temperature, electric water pump and thermostat data with factory-level software. Many European cars use electronic thermostats and pumps that fail without leaking.
- Photos and a written estimate before any repair.
Common coolant leaks on European cars
| Brand | Where we see leaks |
|---|---|
| BMW / MINI | Expansion tank, electric water pump, thermostat, upper radiator hose, coolant pipes under the intake on N63 V8 engines |
| Mercedes-Benz | Thermostat housing, coolant hoses, water pump, auxiliary pumps on AMG models |
| Audi / VW | Plastic water pump and thermostat housing on EA888 2.0T engines, coolant flanges |
| Porsche | Coolant pipes in the engine valley on Cayenne V8 engines, radiators in the front corners |
| Land Rover / Range Rover | Coolant pipes and water pump on supercharged V8 engines, crossover pipes, expansion tank |
| Exotics | Long coolant lines to front radiators on Ferrari, Lamborghini and McLaren models |
How we repair it
- OEM or OE-equivalent parts, often updated designs that replace the original plastic
- The correct coolant, such as VW G12 or G13 types, Mercedes MB 325 types, BMW and Porsche specs, and Jaguar Land Rover OAT coolant
- Vacuum fill and bleed, so no air pockets are left that could cause hot spots
- Test drive and pressure recheck to confirm the leak is gone
EV and hybrid cooling systems
Tesla, Rivian and Lucid models use coolant to manage battery and motor temperature. A leak there can trigger reduced power or charging limits. We diagnose these loops with care for the high-voltage parts. See our EV and hybrid service page.
Why South Florida is hard on cooling systems
Cooling systems work hardest here. Outside temperatures stay high for most of the year, and the A/C adds load to the radiator and fans. Traffic on I-95 and Sunrise Blvd leaves little airflow through the radiator. Plastic parts go through thousands of heat cycles and crack sooner. Salt air near the beach also corrodes aluminum radiators and fittings. A slow leak that might last a season up north can lead to overheating within weeks here.
