Common Tesla, Rivian and Lucid repairs
Electric cars skip oil changes, but they still need regular mechanical care. Here is what we see most.
- Brakes: caliper and slide pin corrosion, seized pistons, pads and rotors, and brake fluid service. Regenerative braking means the friction brakes sit unused for long stretches.
- Suspension: front control arms and ball joints on the Model S and Model X, Tesla air suspension compressors and struts, and Rivian air suspension.
- Tires and alignment: rotation, road-force balancing, flat repair and precision alignment for heavy EVs.
- 12-volt battery: testing and replacement of the low-voltage battery that powers door locks, screens and contactors. A weak 12-volt battery can stop an EV from waking up even with a full high-voltage pack.
- A/C and heat pump: cabin cooling faults, refrigerant service and cabin air filter replacement.
- Coolant checks for the battery and drive unit thermal system.
- Body, paint and glass: collision repair, bumpers, windshields and camera recalibration.
- Pre-purchase and lease-return inspections, with a photo report.
Software updates and high-voltage battery pack work stay with the manufacturer. For hybrids and EVs from other brands, see our EV and hybrid service page.

How South Florida affects electric vehicles
Heat is the biggest factor. EVs keep the high-voltage battery within a narrow temperature range, so in a Broward summer the cooling pumps, chiller and A/C work hard even while the car is parked. A weak cabin A/C or a fan that runs loudly after parking can be the first sign of a thermal system issue.
Humidity and salt air are hard on brakes. Since regenerative braking does most of the stopping, rust builds on rotors and calipers, and slide pins seize. Cars that live near the beach in Fort Lauderdale or Lauderdale-by-the-Sea need brake service more often than the mileage suggests.
Florida flooding is another risk. Driving through deep water on flooded streets can let water into connectors and the underbody. If your EV went through standing water, have it inspected. Finally, heavy EVs on rough I-95 expansion joints wear tires and suspension bushings quickly, so alignment checks pay off.
