Transmission symptoms
- Harsh or delayed shifts, especially from park to drive or 1st to 2nd
- Shudder or vibration at low speed, common on torque converters and dual-clutch units
- Slipping, where RPM rises but the car does not pick up speed
- “Transmission malfunction” or “Drivetrain malfunction” messages, or a gear indicator that flashes
- Limp mode, where the car stays in one gear
- Fluid spots under the car, often from the pan gasket or cooler lines
- Clunks or binding in turns on all-wheel-drive cars, which can point to a transfer case
How we diagnose transmission problems
- Scan the transmission and engine modules with factory-level software. We read fault codes, fluid temperature, clutch pack data and adaptation values.
- Check fluid level and condition. Most European units have no dipstick and need the fluid checked at a set temperature with the engine running.
- Road test with live data. We watch slip values and shift times as the car drives.
- Inspect for leaks and wiring faults. Many shift problems are a leaking connector sleeve or a damaged harness, not a failed gearbox.
- Photos and a written estimate before any repair.
Transmissions we work on
| Transmission | Found in | Common issues |
|---|---|---|
| ZF 8HP | BMW, Audi, Jaguar, Land Rover, Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Rolls-Royce | Pan gasket and mechatronic sleeve leaks, harsh shifts from old fluid |
| Mercedes 7G-Tronic (722.9) | Many Mercedes cars and SUVs | Conductor plate and speed sensor faults, limp mode |
| Mercedes 9G-Tronic | Newer Mercedes and Sprinter vans | Shift quality complaints needing software and adaptations |
| AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT and DCT | AMG models | Clutch adaptations, fluid service |
| Porsche PDK | 911, Boxster, Cayman, Panamera, Macan | Fluid and filter service, clutch wear |
| VW/Audi DSG and S tronic | Golf GTI, Golf R, A3, A4, Q5, S models | Mechatronic faults, clutch shudder |
| BMW M DCT | M3, M4 and other M models | Fluid service, adaptations |
| Ferrari, Lamborghini and McLaren dual-clutch | Exotic models | Clutch wear monitoring, software adaptations |
All-wheel drive and differentials
We service BMW xDrive transfer cases, Mercedes 4MATIC, Audi quattro and Land Rover transfer cases, along with front and rear differentials and axle seals. A worn xDrive transfer case actuator is a frequent cause of drivetrain warnings on X3 and X5 models.
Tesla and EV drive units
Electric cars have a single-speed gearbox in the drive unit. We diagnose noises, leaks and drive unit faults on Tesla, Rivian and Lucid models.
Why South Florida is hard on transmissions
Heat is what wears transmission fluid out. Broward traffic keeps fluid hot for long periods, with stop-and-go on I-95, US-1 and Sunrise Blvd during rush hour. Dual-clutch units also wear clutches faster in heavy traffic. Heavy SUVs like the Range Rover and GLS work their transmissions harder. That is why we recommend a fluid service sooner here than many “lifetime fill” claims suggest.
What to expect on your visit
- Walk in or book ahead at either shop.
- Scan, fluid check and road test by an ASE-certified, factory-trained technician.
- Photos and a written estimate that explains whether a fluid service, software update, part repair or rebuild makes sense.
- Repair after your approval, with a 2-year / 24,000-mile warranty and a final adaptation and road test.
If the car will not move in gear, call the shop to schedule pickup with our concierge service.
